Permanent Happiness - A myth?
Let's find it out:
Happiness. Happiness. Happiness.
That’s all you want at the end of the day. Or actually during the day as well :)
At work, you want to be appreciated and noticed.
At home, you want to be loved and respected.
If that doesn’t happen then you are unhappy. And immediately seek happiness.
But whenever you seek happiness, you seek it outside - in the form of a person or object. Or to be more precise it’s the experience that the person or object gives you that you call happiness.
But experiences keep changing and they don’t last long.
So all you are doing is seeking temporary happiness. (There is nothing inherently wrong with this)
But the real question is - Does something called permanent happiness even exist?
The answer is yes and no.
Let me explain.
I’m not going to tell you something mystical. Rather I will lead you to your own answer. For that, let’s analyse your different states of mind -
What happens when you’re unhappy:
Let’s say you are not in a good relationship with someone.
Whenever you think about that person, you’re bombarded with more thoughts which you term as “negative”.
It might be about the incident.
Or the argument you had or the general opinion you have on that person.
The more you think the worse you feel.
And now to escape this - you seek temporary pleasures in the name of happiness which is a never-ending loop.
Now let’s see the other side of the coin:
What happens when you’re happy:
Here I’m talking about happiness, not just pleasures.
Try to remember your lovely moments with your family.
The moments of pure happiness.
That feeling of contentment when you had nothing to worry about. No stress, just filled with life energy. Just sharing and experiencing happiness.
What kind of thoughts were you having in those moments?
You probably don’t even remember.
Or think about seeing your crush for the first time. You were mesmerised and speechless. (or almost thoughtless if you observe carefully)
You were in Aww.
There were no thoughts involved at that moment. Especially the so-called “positive” thoughts which you think leads to happiness.
So what is permanent happiness:
The common pattern we saw is that your own thoughts lead to either pain or pleasure. And thoughts keep changing.
So there is no way to derive permanent happiness from it.
But if there is something permanent then that is this change.
Not only your thoughts(or lack of), but even your body.
What you’re currently calling as “you” or “me” is changing every moment.
Understanding this deep down(not just superficially) will lead to everlasting peace within.
And this is the only way to be permanently happy(in the internal world).
Yes, the cycle of pain and pleasure will keep going in the transactional world.
But deep down you’re filled with happiness.
Because YOU are that happiness.
While you’re letting that sink in…
I will catch you up next week demystifying another myth in spirituality.
Spreading happiness,
— Ragav
